Testing Results
IMPORTANT! Sites requesting testing must have approval from the appropriate state or local health department before submitting specimens. Approval must be sent to NPHL by email at nphl@unmc.edu or by calling (402) 559-9444.

A Special Microbiology Form must accompany the specimens. Some tests require additional forms and patient history. This will be listed below when applicable. When requested, testing will not be performed without all required information.

  Test: Corynebacterium diphtheriae Culture 
  Synonym: Diphtheriae, Corynebacterium spp 
  Method: Standard reference procedure for C. diphtheriae culture and identification 
  Availability: Test performed Daily, results in 72 h 
  Specimen: Swab of nasopharynx plus throat at site of membrane is preferred specimen.
A swab of nasopharynx plus throat at the site of membrane or inflammation site.
Swab the base of cleansed wound. 
  Collection Device: Use culturette swab with Stuart's or Amies medium. Note: Must be transported to lab within 24 hours of collection.
Specimen Labeling: Test subject to CLIA regulations and required 2 patient identifiers on specimen container and requisition forms 
  Volume: Swab 
  Storage/Transport: Prior to Shipment & Transport: Ambient 15-25°C
Shipping instructions, including specimen-handling requirements during transport:
Package and ship as UN3373 Category B, Biological Substance. Place in biohazard bag with absorbent material. Transport by NPHL ground courier (NPHL brown shipper not required). If courier not available, contact Client Services (866) 290-1406 to arrange pickup.

  Unacceptable: Delay of transport. Refrigerate or frozen specimens 
  Specimen Stability: Stable at Ambient 15-25°C 
  Reference Interval: Negative for Corynebacterium diphtheriae 
  Reportable Disease: Positive Corynebacterium diphtheriae will be reported immediately to local or state health department.
